Open Space Preservation through Land Acquisition and Regulatory Advocacy.

This strategy focuses on the acquisition of undeveloped or developed land to lessen or prevent the impacts of over development on our community’s assets. In general, the strategy requires the following steps: (1) identification or mapping of available open space, (2) prioritization of parcels, and (3) acquisition of property or advocating for use restrictions at the municipal and state levels.

Your contribution to this fund will help achieve these goals. Acquisition of land can take a number of forms. The McKaig Nature Center may purchase land from willing sellers outright, receive a donation of private land, or negotiate deed restrictions on the use of public or private lands.

Throughout McKaig's history, Gold (Girl Scouts), Eagle (Boy Scout) projects along with High School Senior projects have been completed in and around the McKaig park, these projects not only make visiting McKaig a more enjoyable experience, help mold these young adults to be good citizens and projects prove very beneficial to our environment too.

Though fundraising is usually a key component for these projects that the Scouts and Students perform, this detail can detract from the project itself and the burden often falls onto the Scout/Student's family to fully fund the completion of the project.

In special cases, when this financial burden proves to stall a project or causes a severe family financial burden, through this fund the McKaig Nature Center provides a matching grant of up to $400 per project.

The nature of childhood has changed since we went to school. Kids have moved indoors during the last two decades especially in urban areas, taking a physical and mental toll on them. The negative impact of decreased time outdoors includes a doubling of the childhood obesity rate, as well as declining creativity, concentration and social skills.

Connecting children and nature has great health benefits. Studies show outdoor time help children grow lean and strong, enhances imaginations and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance. Furthermore, children who spend time in nature regularly are shown to become better stewards of the environment.

Donations to this fund are used for education programs for underprivileged students and children from disadvantaged areas.
