Parents & Teachers Please Note:
Please do NOT let your children walk on or play near the retaining walls at bridge abutments. While it is fun for the kids to use them as a balance beam, the drop to the stream bed below can be dangerous. The wooden walls are slippery with algae and mist from the stream. Furthermore, erosion from storm water could weaken the walls, possibly leading to their shifting or collapsing.
The retaining wall pictured above was removed on June 2, 2012 due to the potential hazard to children climbing on or near it. We are consulting with engineers and contractors for a long-term fix to strengthen the abutments against erosion.
